# Avocado Studio > Avocado Studio is an open-source AI website editor for existing Next.js and Astro sites. You describe a change in plain language, an AI agent edits the content, images and SEO metadata in the site's own components, you review it in a live draft preview, and it publishes to your CMS or content files. It is self-hosted, licensed Apache-2.0, and runs on your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Google Gemini API key. Avocado Studio edits the website you already have rather than generating a new one. It is not a CMS and not an AI writing tool: it is an open AI layer that sits between AI models and your existing stack (framework, headless CMS, design system, publishing pipeline) and coordinates edits across it. Key facts: - Frameworks: Next.js 15 and 16 on the App Router (`@avocadostudio-ai/site-sdk`), and Astro 5 and later (`@avocadostudio-ai/astro`), where your own `.astro` components do the rendering — no React islands. - Content sources: templates for Sanity, Contentful and Strapi, or a plain JSON file; any other store connects through a content adapter. Publishing writes back only the fields that changed. - AI models: bring your own key — `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY`, `OPENAI_API_KEY` or `GOOGLE_GENAI_API_KEY`. Only the chat needs a key; Avocado never resells tokens. - Editing: chat-driven edits with a plan you approve or discard, click-to-select visual editing, a property panel, live draft preview, publish diff, undo/redo and snapshots. - AI agents: an MCP server (`@avocadostudio-ai/mcp-server`) for Claude Code, Claude Desktop and other MCP hosts; agent skills (`@avocadostudio-ai/skills`) for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Gemini. - Install: `npm create avocado-site@latest` scaffolds a demo site with the editor, or wires Avocado into an existing Next.js project. Requires Node.js 22+. - Licence and price: Apache-2.0, free for commercial use and self-hosting, no sign-up, no seat count. The packages are on npm; the GitHub repository is not public yet. - Made by Yury Horbach (https://yurybuilds.com). ## What people use it for - An AI website editor or visual editor for an existing Next.js (App Router) or Astro site, without migrating to a new platform - Letting marketers and content editors change copy, images and sections without a developer ticket, after a one-time integration - Adding AI editing and visual editing on top of a headless CMS: Sanity, Contentful or Strapi - Rewriting SEO page titles, meta descriptions and social images with AI, reviewed before publishing - Editing a website from Claude Code, Claude Desktop or another MCP host through the MCP server - A self-hosted, open-source alternative to hosted visual builders, running on your own Anthropic, OpenAI or Gemini API key ## Docs - [Documentation](https://docs.avocadostudio.dev): setup, integration and publishing guides - [Connecting an existing site](https://docs.avocadostudio.dev/sites): your components, content model and CMS - [Next.js integration](https://docs.avocadostudio.dev/integration/nextjs-integration): wiring the SDK into a Next.js App Router site ## Integrations and comparisons - [AI editor for Next.js](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/nextjs): wiring into a Next.js 15/16 App Router site, library mode, SEO metadata - [AI editor for Astro](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/astro): the Astro integration, site-renders-itself, publishing to files - [AI editing for Sanity](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/sanity): Portable Text round-trips, _key-addressed patches, Sanity media picker - [AI editing for Contentful](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/contentful): Rich Text and embedded entries, diff publishing - [AI editing for Strapi](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/strapi): Strapi 5 Blocks, a fully self-hosted stack - [MCP server](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/mcp): editing a site from Claude Code, Claude Desktop or any MCP host - [Builder.io alternative](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/alternatives/builder-io): how an open-source, self-hosted layer differs from a hosted visual CMS ## Product - [Homepage](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/): what it does, how it works, integrations and FAQ - [Page builder blocks](https://www.avocadostudio.dev/components): the React blocks that ship with Avocado Studio, with live previews - [Live demo](https://avocado-editor.vercel.app/): the real editor on a sample site, in the browser - [Demo video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp0_u9L9hhk): the product demo on the Avocado Studio YouTube channel ## Packages - [create-avocado-site](https://www.npmjs.com/package/create-avocado-site): scaffold a demo or wire Avocado into an existing Next.js project - [@avocadostudio-ai/site-sdk](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@avocadostudio-ai/site-sdk): AI editing and live preview for a Next.js site - [@avocadostudio-ai/astro](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@avocadostudio-ai/astro): the Astro integration - [@avocadostudio-ai/mcp-server](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@avocadostudio-ai/mcp-server): page, block and publishing tools over the Model Context Protocol - [@avocadostudio-ai/cli](https://www.npmjs.com/package/@avocadostudio-ai/cli): self-host launcher for the editor UI ## Optional - [Product Hunt](https://www.producthunt.com/products/avocado-studio) - [Contact](mailto:hello@avocadostudio.dev)
